BDNA's GreenScan enables IT energy consumption savings of up to 45%

Plans to offer solution to European market to help companies make dramatic savings and prove green credentials

Paris, May 19, 2008 - BDNA, the leading provider of IT infrastructure insight and analysis, announces GreenScan. This latest offering allows companies to measure their carbon footprint and analyse their technology usage in order to identify potential energy savings. Green IT is a hot topic for businesses. Gartner predicts that suppliers to large global enterprises will need to prove their green credentials via an audited process by 2011 in order to retain preferred supplier status. It also suggests that by 2009, more than one third of IT organisations will include an environmental element in their top six criteria for IT related purchases(1).

Over 80% of energy in the data centre is consumed by a combination of servers, storage, and computer room air conditioning(2). BDNA has extended its flagship product, BDNA Insight, which provides accurate, enriched intelligence about IT infrastructures, to help CIOs pinpoint where energy savings can be achieved, for example through server consolidation or more effective power management. It also enables them to keep abreast of global green legislations and initiatives. In a matter of days, GreenScan does a screening of a company's IT infrastructure and provides detailed analysis of its energy consumption. Companies are able to:

  • create an analysis of their technology assets and visualise energy consumption by machine, department, or by subsidiary.
  • model different simulations and scenarios in order to evaluate potential energy savings through virtualisation, replacing equipment which is out of warranty and switching to low energy alternatives.
  • apply BDNA's analytical capabilities in order to identify energy savings.
  • evaluate, compare and benchmark different departments or subsidiaries.

"IT purchasing has changed in recent years, as organisations take environmental factors into consideration in their decision making. Companies should ready themselves for green legislations in the coming months and years," said Eric Faurisson, European general manager for BDNA. "By putting a framework in place to identify opportunities for optimising IT energy consumption, GreenScan can quickly provide a way to action potential energy savings, helping companies to benefit from dramatic cost savings as a result. We are now looking for implementation partners in the UK and across Europe to help us to meet growing demand from customers."

BDNA has completed three successful projects in the Benelux region. For example, the Dutch city of Zwolle, which has a population of over 115,000, has used BDNA to gain a precise measurement of the annual energy consumption of its IT infrastructure. It has used the resulting analysis and insight to identify and quantify the potential savings that could be achieved by optimisation. The project has been managed by BDNA's partner, Pecoma, a Dutch systems integrator. As a result, the town expects to save 46% of its annual energy consumption, which corresponds to a reduction of 75,000 euros. This will be achieved through the replacement of outdated technology, by switching to low energy consumption models and by the consolidation of servers, for example through virtualisation.
